Student schedules will soon be available for viewing. Being a mother myself, I remember how exciting that can be! As our incoming 6th graders transition from an elementary schedule to a middle school schedule with six different classes, up to six different teachers, and a Hawk Time advisory teacher, scheduling becomes much more like putting together a large puzzle. Our scheduling system is designed to balance classes and meet student needs, while also accommodating courses that are only offered during a single class period. For example, our new Color Guard class is only offered during one specific period of the day, which can impact the placement of other classes on a student's schedule.

While we work hard to create the best possible schedule for every student, we are unable to accommodate requests for specific teachers or class periods. Additionally, some schedules may change during the first week of school as we balance class sizes and ensure all students are appropriately placed.

Most importantly, please be kind to our counselors. They spend countless hours building schedules for hundreds of students and work diligently to meet academic requirements, elective requests, support services, and class-size requirements. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and partnership as we work together to ensure a successful start to the school year for every Hawk.

One of the biggest questions our incoming 6th grade families have is, "What does my child need to bring on the first day?" The good news is—not much!

Throughout the first three days of school students will follow their schedules and participate in what we call Hawk Camp. This is an exciting, yet structured, time where we teach students everything they need to know to be successful at Wertheimer, including how to navigate the building, transition between classes, participate in safety drills, go through the lunch line, access support when needed, and understand our campus expectations.

There is no need to bring all school supplies at once. Teachers will communicate what materials are needed for each class as the week progresses. We want our Hawks focused on learning the routines and becoming comfortable in their new environment.

Students do not need their P.E. uniform on the first day. The coaching staff will let students know when P.E. shirts, lockers, and locker room procedures will begin. Students who have already purchased a P.E. shirt will receive it during class, and coaches will provide additional information for those who still need to purchase one.

We know starting middle school can feel exciting—and maybe a little overwhelming—for both students and parents. That's why we've intentionally designed the first three days to help students build confidence, learn routines, and feel connected. Our staff will be there every step of the way!

Car rider dismissal begins at 4:30 PM and is typically completed within approximately 20 minutes when all procedures are followed. To help traffic flow safely, all car riders must be picked up in the FRONT of the building, and vehicles should enter the car rider line from FM 723 only. Please note that the back and side parking areas are reserved exclusively for LCISD Transportation buses.

For the safety of all students, we cannot release car riders from the back or side of the building, and we ask that families do not use the back parking lot to access the car rider line. We also ask that you do not instruct your student to meet you in the front parking lot, at the side of the building, or in the back of the building. Please wait patiently in the line.

Throughout the day, we will check with students multiple times to ensure they know their dismissal method and where they need to go at the end of the day.

To help every Hawk get home safely, please make transportation changes and early pick-up requests no later than 4:00 PM, and whenever possible, keep transportation arrangements consistent.

Bus riders will be released to the bus porch once their bus arrives. During the first week of school, buses may run later than usual as drivers take extra care to ensure every student is on the correct bus and arrives home safely. We appreciate your patience and understanding as students, drivers, and routes settle into a routine.

Students must have their ID badge each day to scan on and off the bus. To help ensure a safe and smooth dismissal, please inform our front office staff of any transportation changes no later than 4:00 PM. If possible, keep transportation arrangements as consistent as possible whenever feasible.

Our staff and transportation teams will be actively supporting students throughout the dismissal process. We will take the time needed to make sure our Hawks are headed to the right destination safely.

Students whose parent/guardian or emergency contact works at Foster High School or Briscoe Junior High are the ONLY students permitted to walk to those campuses after school. To receive approval, families must submit a permission letter to the front office, or an email from their Foster/Briscoe LCISD email to our front office receptionist donna.weishiemer@lcisd.org. Once verification is completed and approved by Principal Spencer, students will be approved to participate in walker dismissal.

For student safety, walkers will be released as a group and escorted across the street once car rider dismissal has concluded. Since we do not have staff available to continuously monitor the route between campuses, students will not be released to walk independently before that time.

To help ensure a safe and smooth dismissal process, please inform the front office staff of any transportation changes no later than 4:00 PM and keep transportation arrangements as consistent as possible whenever feasible.

Please know that our staff has carefully planned for students' safety and will be actively supporting them throughout the dismissal process.

As we prepare for the new school year, we want to remind families about House Bill 1481, a Texas law passed during the 89th Texas Legislative Session that prohibits students from using personal communication devices during the school day and on school property. This law applies to all Texas public schools, including Lamar CISD.

Personal communication devices include cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, radios, and similar electronic devices. Exceptions are only made for students with documented medical needs or special education accommodations.

To comply with state law, all personal communication devices must be turned off before entering campus and remain off throughout the school day. Devices must be stored in a backpack or locker and may not be carried on a student's person, including pockets. Students may not use, access, or visibly possess a personal communication device during the school day. Any device that is used or visible during school hours will be subject to confiscation and disciplinary consequences.

These expectations apply throughout the entire school building, including:

Students may turn devices back on after the final dismissal bell at 4:30 PM. At that time, students may use their devices to communicate with parents or guardians regarding transportation and after-school plans.

Please note that receiving a call or text from a parent, guardian, or family member during class is not an acceptable reason for a student to use a personal communication device. If you need to reach your child during the school day, please contact the front office, and we will ensure your message is delivered. If a student needs to contact a parent or guardian during the school day for any reason, they should report to the front office, where we will assist them.

We understand that cell phones have become a regular part of daily life for many students and families. However, this expectation is required by state law and is designed to minimize distractions, maximize instructional time, and support a safe learning environment for all students. We appreciate your partnership in helping your child understand these expectations before the first day of school.

Students may bring lunches on the first day or get a school lunch. Breakfast and lunch are not automatically free unless you qualify for free or reduced-price meals and have completed the required application online. Snacks and "extras" are not free. Change is not provided in the lunch line. All money will go into your child's account. If you need to add money to your child's account, please click on the School Cafe link below. You can now log onto your SchoolCash Online Account, click on your child's name and see all available options for purchase in one place. So, if you have not yet purchased your PE shirt or if you are interested in purchasing a spirit shirt or school supply pack, you can go straight to your School Cash Online account and purchase it much easier than before.

SchoolCash Online is a safe and secure way to purchase items offered by our school. Your child does not need to carry cash to school, you will have an easily accessible receipt for the purchase, and can immediately see if you have purchased the item or not.

If you had a SchoolCash Online account previously, you do not need to set anything up. But if you are new to the district or have never set-up an account, please log on to set one up. You will need your child's student ID number, which you will find in your Skyward Family Access account, or ask your kiddo. Most students know their student ID number. You can also call us for assistance.
